 D.E.E.P. (DIVERS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM)

The Ocean  County Department of Corrections community education unit has developed a follow up show to its popular Sam Tuna puppet show.

Deep is a hands on way for children to learn about both non point source pollution and native sea life. Our department's divers along with naturalists from cattus Island Park, show children the wonders of Ocean Countys waters.

First the divers explain all the equipment needed to scuba dive, after which they enter the water and start to collect sea life. After the collection is completed the sea life is placed into a holding tank were the naturalist describes the creatures. Children can hold sea stars and sometimes even sea horses. The divers then re enter the waters and bring back pollution found in the same areas as the sea life. The divers explain to the children the harm the pollution can do to the sea life and the environment. They also show ways they can prevent pollution.

Due to tides and the location this program is only performed 3 times in the spring and 1 time in the fall. We limit the size of the program to 1 schools 2nd grades, Or 4 second grade classes.

If your school is unable to make the trip we have a slide presentation which describes the whole program with slides taken during the program on the surface and under, and is combined with a recycling segment.

SAM TUNA VS POLLUTION:
Sam is a part puppet show part read along, presented in a fun way that all students and teachers, find to be a great way to learn.
