Consumer Tip - Alert!
Do not respond to e-mails by calling a telephone number unless you positively KNOW WHERE the area code goes to. Example: 809 is the Dominican Republic,You could be dialing a Scam number and you can be billed just like a U.S. 900 number without knowing about it (until the bill comes). Evidently US consumer laws do not apply in foreign countries. Further, you do not have to dial "001" to go International with these numbers. That's what makes the scams effective. They look like US long distance numbers. Here is a sample list of "friendly looking" but potentially financially deadly area codes:
- 809: Dominican Republic
- 758: St. Lucia
- 664: Montserrat
- 242: Bahamas
- 868: Trinidad and Tobago
- 473: Grenada
- 902: Nova Scotia
- 709: Newfoundland
- 869: Nevis/St. Kitts
- 345: Cayman Islands
