Veteran's Day

In a world where freedom can never be "taken for granted"  let us reflect upon the actions of common men, who display uncommon valor, so others may be delivered from the grip of oppression, and the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness secured for us all.

Raising-1

Iwo Jima
While the flag was being raised the fighting was still going on all around them.
Several of these "Hero" flag raisers died later that day so that others might live.
These acts of self sacrifice have been repeated countless times by American service men and women throughout our nations history.

There are six Flag Raisers on the photo. Four in the front line and two in back.
The front four are (left to right) Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, John Bradley and Harlon Block.
The back two are Michael Strank (behind Sousley) and Rene Gagnon (behind Bradley).
Strank, Block and Sousley would die shortly afterwards.

Special note:  With all the conflicts veterans have fought in and numerous images of heroism we could have used, the famous "Flag Raising" picture above captures the essence of an ideal worth fighting for.  It may well be one of the most reproduced photographs ever taken.  Please visit the Iwo Jima site for more info.  As we continue our tribute to veterans you can look forward to more content in this section of OCCIS so please check back from time to time.  If you would like to recommend a site we should add to our list, your e-mail would be most welcome.
